Upgrading Magento from 1.3.2.4 to 1.5 or 1.6

I have set up 4 Magento websites for my clients using Magento version 1.3.2.4. The server that these sites are on is running PHP version 5.2 but this will be upgraded to PHP 5.3 later this year. Magento 1.3.x is not compatible with PHP 5.2 so I will either need to tweak the code of 1.3.2.4 to make it work or upgrade each Magento installation. In the longer term it makes sense to upgrade the software because it potentially improves security and adds new functionality.

There are a number of third-party extensions on each site – these will need to be upgraded and also the themes will need to be re-coded because of the way templates were coded after Magento version 1.4.

What I would like to do is set up a test site at, e.g. domain.com/test and then once that is fully upgraded and working point domain.com to domain.com/test. I know this can be done but I am a bit concerned about whether this would have any knock-on effects or affect search engine rankings etc. Also I am wondering what would happen next time I need to upgrade these sites – would I set up a new test site at domain.com/test/test which would be visible at domain.com/test?

I am looking for some sound advice on the best way to proceed and also asking if anyone would be interested in taking on any of these upgrades, either doing part of the work or overseeing the whole thing. If anyone is interested please post your website URL and / or email and I will get in touch with more details.

Many thanks.
